Ken Rosewall Arena will be transformed into a sea of colour when the NSW Swifts welcome the Sunshine Coast Lightning for the Club’s Pride Match on Sunday 7 May.
Working closely with Proud2Play and Principal Partner QBE Insurance, the Stadium’s lower and upper bowls will be decked out in Pride seat covers – creating a Rainbow Stadium for the fans.
In what will be an occasion to remember, attendees will also be able to take their seat cover home as a treasured memento.
In the lead-up to the Suncorp Super Netball Round 8 game, Proud2Play - who focus on increasing LGBTIQA+ engagement in sport, exercise and active recreation - will also be undertaking education sessions with Swifts players, coaches, staff and game-day volunteers to impart key knowledge relating to the importance of hosting a Pride Match.
The initiative is part of a wider Inclusion Round being undertaken by the Super Netball League.
NSW Swifts Executive General Manager Kath Tetley explained why the Club had chosen to host a Pride Match in 2023.
“We are honoured and excited to be hosting a Pride Match when the Lightning come to Sydney this weekend,” she said.
“We have a number of people in our environment who identify as part of the LGBTIQA+ community, and demonstrating our support for them and everyone in the wider LGBTIQA+ family is paramount to ensure our game champions the inclusivity that is a key part of its make-up.
“This game means a lot to us as a Club and when we say that netball is for everyone – we mean every part of those words
“The expertise that Proud2Play brings to the match has been vital and provided us with a deeper understanding of biases and complexities that exist today, and how we can do our part to promote a more inclusive and equal society.”
Tetley also thanked QBE Insurance, who are playing a huge role in bringing the Rainbow Stadium transformation to life.
“When we first raised the idea with QBE, they were very keen to get involved because we know that LGBTIQA+ inclusion is a very important part of their social footprint.
“As a Club it is vital to have partners who are equally as passionate when it comes to community initiatives and I would like to thank QBE for their wonderful support.”
