Six million viewers tuned in to Channel 9 to watch the Suncorp Super Netball League this year, with broadcast numbers revealed for the 2021 season.
In a new Saturday timeslot, the Grand Final between the NSW Swifts and Giants Netball attracted over 770,000 viewers.
The Swifts went on to claim their seventh national league title with a 63-59 win.
The Super Netball teams relocated interstate a number of times this year as the coronavirus pandemic continued to present significant challenges for sport.
With many fans unable to attend matches, Channel 9 experienced a seven per cent growth across the five city metro markets - Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. This is highlighted by a 22 per cent growth in Sydney and Brisbane.
Fans continued to consume netball content anywhere, with streaming on Telstra’s Netball Live mobile app increasing by six per cent and strong engagement on Telstra TV, which included a 43 per cent spike in video consumption during the Finals series.
Netball Australia CEO Kelly Ryan thanked netball fans for supporting the Super Netball league, especially this season.
“A 22 per cent increase in viewers in Sydney and Brisbane is outstanding and we are excited by the growth of our competition, which continues to go from strength to strength,” Ryan said.
“This is credit to our broadcast partners Channel 9 and Telstra, who have been with us since the inception of Suncorp Super Netball in 2017.
“We thank them for their hard work and commitment to growing the Suncorp Super Netball League and making it more accessible to fans across the country and the world.”
The league will enter a new five-year broadcast agreement with the Foxtel Group from 2022.
