On the day we should have started our 2020 Suncorp Super Netball title defence, captain Maddy Proud shared a poem with the team and the wider Swifts Family to mark the date and look forward to the team returning to play. Have a read:
Today should be game day,
Our favourite day of the week.
We should be pulling on the red dress,
And admiring Garbo's physique.
We should be measuring our ranges,
And getting strapped by Steve and Ness.
We should be doing prehab,
And putting in our song requests.
We should be lining up,
To get our heart rates and GPS.
We should be annoying Lukas and Johey,
And causing them unnecessary stress.
Helen should be applying her lip balm,
And eating her banana.
Turner should be gossiping,
About the latest drama.
Briony should be writing,
The game plan on the board.
We should be singing JB,
And nailing every chord.
We should be admiring Loz,
And her brand-new hairdo.
Anita should come rushing in,
Like a tornado, right on cue.
We should be begging Nat,
To braid our game day hair.
We should be arm in arm,
As Sammy leads us all in prayer.
The umpires should come in,
To check our fingernails.
We should be pestering Dani,
For all her relationship details.
Tay should be doing a handstand,
Or dancing to the beat.
Paige should be strapping,
Her rockets to her feet.
We should be warming up,
And nailing every pass.
We should be in a huddle,
Ready to go and kick some arse.
Sarah should be taking,
The first intercept of the game.
Halpin should be debuting,
Her brand-new surname.
Liv and Kel should be cheering,
As we kickstart season 2020.
We should be getting our first win,
Which would be the first of many.
But instead we find ourselves here,
In a world of great unknown.
Separated from one another,
Only able to speak on the phone.
But we know we will get through this,
And be together again.
It will teach us to be patient,
And appreciate being able to train.
Our time will come to show the world,
That last year was just the beginning.
The Swifts are just getting started,
And we’re getting used to winning!
