It may be the off-season but Teigan O’Shannassy isn’t taking a rest with the Swifts defender recently joining fellow athletes from a host of codes to highlight the disappearance of Sydney’s underwater forests.
It has been reported that losing underwater forests of seaweed is as detrimental to the environment as losing rainforests on the land, and that’s why O’Shannassy is using her profile to shine a light on an issue that could have a serious impact on the lives of everyday Australians, young and old.
Earlier this week the star defender joined athletes from Aussie Rules, soccer, surfing and rugby to participate in the Ultimate Recovery Session at Coogee Beach in support of Operation Crayweed.
Operation Crayweed’s scientists guided the athletes through the restoration process, demonstrating how their innovative technology, developed locally in Sydney, is successfully restoring crayweed populations along 70 kilometres of coastline.
These restored crayweed forests play a critical role in providing food and habitat for diverse marine life and contribute to carbon sequestration.
Professor Adriana Vergés of Operation Crayweed expressed her gratitude.
“It was wonderful to engage with these enthusiastic athletes and involve them in our marine restoration project,” she said in a media release.
“By reintroducing Crayweed to Sydney’s reefs, we are not just bringing back one species; we are rebuilding an entire ecological community.
“This project is incredibly rewarding, and we are deeply grateful for the support that makes it possible.”
