The NSW Swifts will start their 2020 Suncorp Super Netball title defence with the stiffest of challenges when they host two-time Premiers the Sunshine Coast Lightning in a Round 1 Grand Final rematch at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday 3 May.
The standout tie of the opening round, it will be the first netball game to be played at the Swifts’ new home venue, which is currently undergoing a $55 million revamp before playing host to Tennis’ ATP Cup in January.
In all the Swifts will play seven regular-season Super Netball games at Ken Rosewall Arena with Briony Akle’s troops hosting local rivals the Giants in the first NSW Derby of the year in Round 6 on Saturday 6 June.
Before that the Swifts will welcome long-time rivals the Queensland Firebirds in Round 3 (Sunday 17 May) and the Melbourne Vixens in Round 5 (Sunday 31 May), which also doubles as the competition’s Indigenous Round.
The West Coast Fever will be the next visitors in Round 9 (Saturday 4 July) before the Collingwood Magpies make the trip to Sydney for Round 10 just over a week later on Sunday 12 July.
The Giants will host second NSW Derby, also at Ken Rosewall Arena, in Round 12 on Sunday 26 July, before the Swifts play their final regular-season home game against the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Round 13 on Sunday 2 August.
NSW’s first away tie of the year will be a Round 2 trip to Melbourne to face the Collingwood Magpies before they journey west to face the Fever in Perth in Round 4.
The Swifts will then tackle back-to-back road trips to Adelaide and Brisbane, to face the Thunderbirds and Firebirds in Rounds 7 and 8 respectively, before returning to Melbourne in Round 11, this time to face the Vixens.
Their final regular-season game will be the second meeting with the Lightning, away on the Sunshine Coast.
Like in previous seasons there will be a three-week Finals Series, which will be contested by the top four teams and the end of the regular-season.
The Major and Minor Semi Finals will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 15-16 August, with the Preliminary Final taking centre stage on Sunday 23 August before the 2020 Champions are crowned at the Grand Final on Sunday 30 August.
Head coach Akle said the opening round clash with the Lightning was a fitting way to welcome netball to its new Ken Rosewall Arena home.
“We had plenty of epic battles with the Lightning last year and having the current top two teams in the league playing the first game at Sydney’s newest indoor venue is pretty special,” she said.
“It has been very exciting to see how the project has developed over the past year and I can’t wait to see our players run out in what will be a world-class venue for teams and fans alike.
“I know the Lightning will feel like they owe us one after the Grand Final, but given we dropped three games to them last year, we won’t be short of motivation either. It’s going to be a huge contest.”
