Suncorp Super Netball players, umpires, all eight clubs and Netball Australia have united to make a stand against violence against women.
Beginning this weekend and continuing throughout the 2024 Suncorp Super Netball season, all players and umpires at all games will wear purple armbands – the colour which represents domestic violence awareness.
Netball was created by women for women and is the leading female team sport in Australia. The sport will shine a light on this national crisis and commits to developing a national netball strategy to play a leading role in ending violence against women.
Australian Netball Players’ Association President Joanna Weston said Super Netball players were committed to raising awareness and taking a stand.
"One woman is killed every nine days by a current or former partner, and one in four women has experienced physical violence by a current or former partner,” Weston said.
“Our sport is coming together to take a stand and say this must stop.
“From this weekend, Suncorp Super Netball players will wear purple armbands at all games to raise awareness for violence against women.
“We commit to doing more – to raising awareness and being a part of cultural change that must occur to stop this nation-wide problem.”
Netball Australia CEO Stacey West said the netball community was coming together to bring awareness to violence against women.
“Our sport is making a stand against this national crisis,” West said.
“I want thank all players, Suncorp Super Netball clubs, umpires and the sport more broadly for coming together to shine a light on violence against women.”
