The NSW Swifts and Adelaide Thunderbirds were forced to share the spoils in a 25-all draw after electrical failure brought a premature end to the Suncorp Super Netball Round 2 clash at Stadium SA tonight.
Due to a high voltage transformer issue causing the lights to go off at the venue, the match was not able to be completed in the allocated timeframe in which it must be played.
The electrical failure came after the contest had been delayed an hour due to an issue with the court surface prior to the first centre pass.
The game was declared a draw and points shared in accordance with SSN rules of the game.
The opening exchanges were blistering in front of a packed house at Netball SA Stadium. The Swifts had the better of them with Sarah Klau, playing her 100th National League game, and Maddy Turner pressing themselves on the Adelaide attack of Lucy Austin and Eleanor Cardwell.
Heading into the first Power Five period of the game the Swifts led by four which forced the hosts into a timeout.
The visitors controlled the Super Shot period well, forcing another two defensive turnovers, which Romelda Aiken-George and Helen Housby converted, but Cardwell landed two two-pointers to keep the South Australians well in touch at quarter time: 16-12.
The Swifts continued to look the more composed side in the second quarter, forcing the Thunderbirds to make some stray passes in the attacking third, but NSW weren’t as fluid as they had been previously when attempting to capitalise on the possession gains.
Five minutes from halftime the Swifts still only led by four despite making their hosts look rattled.
Some massive plays from two world-class performers brought the crowd to back into proceedings.
The Thunderbirds were quick to take advantage after the defensive duo of Shamera Sterling and Latanya Wilson came up with key defensive intercepts and tips to bring Adelaide roaring back into the contest.
With Tippah Dwan replacing Austin the home attackhad more movement in the circle and the former Firebird and Cardwell did what they needed to ensure the scoreline was tied at 25-all when the sides headed to the sheds.
