NSW Swifts Centurion Catherine Cox AM has been inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame, capping off a career that spanned close to two decades at the top of the international and domestic game.
Born in New Zealand and raised in Sydney, Cox grew up playing at Hills District Netball Association before progressing through the Netball NSW pathway and representing her state in Under 17s, 19s and Opens.
A member of the inaugural Sydney Swifts team in 1997, Cox played 192 games in the Swifts dress, establishing herself as one of the Club’s greatest-ever players.
A prolific goal shooter, fierce competitor and natural leader, Cox was a member of the premiership-winning teams in 2004, 2005 and 2006, helping establish the Swifts as one of the dominant teams of the Commonwealth Bank Trophy era.
When the Sydney Swifts became the NSW Swifts in 2008, there was no more fitting player to lead the Club forward than Cox.
Appointed Captain of the inaugural NSW Swifts team, Cox led the side to the first ANZ Championship title.
Her performance in the Grand Final earned her MVP honours, while her outstanding season was recognised with the Australian ANZ Championship Player of the Season award.
Cox captained the NSW Swifts for four seasons, setting a standard of leadership, professionalism and performance that continues to resonate within the Club today.
Beyond the Swifts, Cox built an extraordinary domestic career, accumulating 254 National League appearances across the Swifts, Perth Orioles, West Coast Fever and Melbourne Vixens. She finished her playing career in 2014 with a premiership with the Vixens.
Her impact on the international game was just as profound.
After making her Australian Diamonds debut in 1997, Cox went on to earn 108 Test caps, representing Australia at three Netball World Cups and three Commonwealth Games.
She was part of Australia’s World Cup-winning teams in 2007 and 2011, served as vice-captain of the 2011 World Cup-winning side and captained the Diamonds on seven occasions.
Her ability to consistently deliver on the biggest stage made Cox one of the most respected shooters of her generation and one of the enduring figures of Australian netball.
Her list of individual honours reflects that impact. Cox was named Australian International Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, Australian ANZ Championship Player of the Season in 2008, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2022. That same year, she was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and Netball NSW Hall of Fame.
Cox also held the National League appearance record for 12 years before Romelda Aiken-George surpassed the mark during the 2026 Suncorp Super Netball season.
Since retiring from playing, Cox has continued to give back to the game, becoming a familiar voice across Super Netball and Diamonds coverage through her broadcast work.
Her induction into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame as an Athlete Member stands as a fitting tribute to a career defined by longevity, leadership and consistent excellence at the highest level.
The Australian Netball Awards will take place on 30 October in Melbourne, with further Hall of Fame inductees and award recipients to be announced in the coming weeks.
