The NSW Swifts would like to congratulate QBE Swifts Academy member Sophie Fawns who has been named as a Commonwealth Games NSW Athlete Grant recipient in 2021.
The NSW 19/U attacker, who has played with the Swifts senior team in pre-season games, hails from Wagga Wagga and regularly makes the long trip to Sydney for netball commitments.
"Sophie is an enormously exciting netball player and an equally impressive young woman," Margaret Hamley, General Mangaer of Performance & Pathways at Netball NSW, said.
"As a regional athlete, Sophie has the additional challenge of living six hours from Netball Central, the hub of netball in NSW. Sophie and her family have driven the road countless times over the past three years. She takes the travel in her stride and always arrives with energy and an open mind to learn.
"She demonstrates gratitude at a level I have not seen before and exudes a positivity and excitement that is contagious in a team environment."
This is the fourth edition of the CGNSW Athlete Grants, which first commenced in 2016 and are awarded every second year.
Winning athletes must be a resident of NSW, under 20 years of age, and nominated by a state sporting organisation within a sport on the program at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham or Commonwealth Championships in Chandigarh.
Eligible recipients are awarded $1,000 each.
