The Sydney Swifts were one of the the original eight teams when the all-Australian Commonwealth Bank Trophy (CBT) was introduced in 1997. They were coached by Julie Fitzgerald for the duration of the competition.
Three NSW teams played in the CBT from 1997-2007; the Hunter Jaegers, Sydney Sandpipers and Sydney Swifts.
While the Swifts and Sandpipers were two of the original teams, the Hunter Jaegers, based in Newcastle, were introduced in 2003.
When the CBT ended in 2007 the Sydney Swifts had won four premierships (2001, 2004, 2006, 2007), just one shy of Melbourne Phoenix.
They then grew to encompass the whole of NSW for the 2008 trans-Tasman ANZ Championship, with the NSW Swifts’ claiming the Club’s fifth Premiership in the same year.
Catriona Wagg was the first-ever Swifts captain and a number of Swifts legends made their name in this period for the club, including Diamonds greats Liz Ellis, Catherine Cox and Kim Green.
Below are all the athletes who wore the Yellow Dress of the Sydney Swifts, before they became the NSW Swifts in 2008.
