The NSW Swifts have made the difficult decision to not travel to South Australia for planned pre-season games against the Adelaide Thunderbirds this Thursday and Friday.
The decision comes as a result of COVID-19 exposure which has been detected in or around the high-performance units of the teams over the last 48 hours.
Swifts Executive General Manager Tracey Scott said it was an extremely difficult decision to make given the close proximity to scheduled travel and the commitment the Club had made to the Thunderbirds.
However, based on the medical advice received from the Swifts’ Chief Medical Officer, and taking into account the now heightened risk of an extended isolation for players and staff in another state, the decision was made to not travel.
“Obviously this is very disappointing for both teams,” Scott said. “The Thunderbirds have been looking really good in pre-season and we were excited about going up against them.
"However, the change in circumstances over the last 48 hours and the timing of the trip in relation to Round 1 has meant we cannot proceed to travel.
“I would like to sincerely thank the Thunderbirds for their understanding. We appreciate this is disappointing news for them. In particular, as they had sold tickets to the game forming part of their fan day, but they understand our decision and the ongoing challenges that a COVID-19 environment presents to all of the Suncorp Super Netball Clubs.”
The Swifts start their Suncorp Super Netball title defence on Saturday 26 March with a Round 1 Grand Final rematch against the Giants at Ken Rosewall Arena (7pm).
